These types of texts are fictionalized representations of conditions in which dread, ignorance, and misunderstanding have got shaped each of our sense of recent history and modern culture. They offer voice and gives claims of identity to people in culture who have usually remained socially and often monetarily marginalized, generally women, the poor, and people of colour.
